Our flock consists of Katahdin hair sheep, a breed specifically selected for low-maintenance, high-quality meat production. Unlike wool breeds, Katahdins naturally shed their coats, eliminating the need for shearing while thriving in hot, humid climates like South Carolina’s. Their strong parasite resistance, excellent mothering ability, and efficient weight gain make them an ideal choice for sustainable, pasture-based management.
We follow a September breeding cycle, with lambing occurring during the winter months and weaning in May. In our experience, winter-born lambs tend to be much heartier than those born later in the spring, as they avoid the peak parasite season and benefit from early-season forages during their most critical growth period.
All of our lambs are weaned between 60-90 lbs, with rams typically reaching 70-100 lbs at weaning. Rams are ready for processing shortly after, while ewes make excellent additions to a breeding or meat-producing flock. Our ewes are not bred at the time of sale, giving buyers full control over their breeding program.
At Grimshaw Farms, we specialize in providing hardy, well-managed Katahdin sheep for those looking to start or expand a meat-producing flock. Whether you’re a homesteader raising your own food or a small-scale producer looking for low-maintenance, productive sheep, our stock is bred for resilience, efficiency, and meat quality—not show pedigrees.
We prioritize pasture-based production with an emphasis on rotational grazing to maintain soil health, improve forage quality, and naturally reduce parasite pressure. While we do not grain-feed year-round, we supplement with grain only during winter hay feeding, based on hay quality and the needs of our breeding stock.
Maintaining a low-maintenance, naturally healthy flock is our priority. We follow best management practices to minimize worm loads, including strict culling of parasite-prone animals and using genetic selection for parasite resistance. We only deworm breeding animals periodically and only when necessary—no blanket worming programs.
All lambs and ewes receive annual CDT vaccinations to protect against clostridial diseases and tetanus. Hoof trimming is minimal, as our sheep are selected for sound feet and naturally strong hooves. Most ewes go several years before needing a trim.
All sheep are tagged with USDA scrapie tags for traceability and compliance. We also provide efficient load-out facilities, ensuring smooth transport whether you’re hauling a few sheep in a small stock trailer or loading a larger group in any weather conditions.
If you're looking for hardy, pasture-raised Katahdins that will thrive in South Carolina’s climate and support a sustainable, meat-focused operation, we’d love to help you get started.
